No comments October 28th, 2011

The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer is a program used to run presentations on computers that do not have Microsoft PowerPoint installed. The Office PowerPoint Viewer is added by default to the same disk or network location that contains one or more presentations you packaged by using the Package for CD feature.

The PowerPoint Viewer is installed by default with a Microsoft Office 2003 installation for use with the Package for CD feature. The PowerPoint Viewer file is also available for download from the Microsoft Office Online Web site.

Presentations password-protected for opening or modifying can be opened by the PowerPoint Viewer. Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. As of March 2011, Firefox is the second most widely used browser with approximately 30% of worldwide usage share of web browsers. The browser has had particular success in Germany and Poland, where it is the most popular browser with 60% usage  and 47%  respectively.

To display web pages, Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine, which implements most current web standards in addition to several features that are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards.

The latest Firefox features include tabbed browsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, private browsing, location-aware browsing (also known as “geolocation”) based exclusively on a Google service and an integrated search system that uses Google by default in most localizations. Functions can be added through extensions, created by third-party developers, of which there is a wide selection, a feature that has attracted many of Firefox’s users.

Firefox runs on various operating systems including Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and many other platforms. Its current stable release is version 5.0, released on June 21, 2011. Firefox’s source code is tri-licensed under the GNU GPL, GNU LGPL, or Mozilla Public License.

Panda Cloud Antivirus

No comments April 1st, 2011

When it originally debuted, Panda Cloud Antivirus was notable as a free security solution for two reasons: Panda traded on its reputation as a solid security suite vendor making its first foray into the realm of freeware, and the program attained its goal of freeing up system resources by putting much of the program’s heavy lifting in the cloud. Now we can add a third reason to the list: it’s now known as an effective alternative to the security powerhouses.

When you open Cloud Antivirus, the main window lets you know whether you’re safe or not with a big red or green icon. Cloud Antivirus works as other antivirus solutions do, offering a Quick Scan and a Custom scan for specific folder, files, and drives, but its ancillary features are exceptionally light. You can opt out of contributing anonymous data to the cloud, but that also opts you out of automatic threat management. There’s a network connection proxy option should you need it, and a reporting feature that will show you what kind of threats have been detected and removed from your computer. You can filter the report by All, Last 24 hours, Last Week, or Last Month, and there’s a Recycle Bin pane from which you can recover a false positive, should you need it. The modest level of tweaks and customizations have been hidden behind an obnoxious “flipping” screen that cheesily rotates when you need to access it, but they do provide choices in a clean UI that weren’t available before.

Download acceleration, also known as multipart download, is a term for the method employed by software such as download managers to download a single file by splitting it in segments and using several simultaneous connections to download these segments from a single server.

The reason for doing so is to circumvent server side limitations of bandwidth per connection. Because in normal networking situations all individual connections are treated equally, rather than actual file transfers, multiple connections yields an advantage on saturated links over simple connections, both in terms of total bandwidth allocation and resilience. Many servers, however, implement a maximum number of simultaneous connections per client in order to mitigate this.

This is not to be confused with segmented downloading, which allows a client to download segments of a file simultaneously from multiple servers.

Opera 10.62

No comments September 24th, 2010

Opera is a web browser and Internet suite developed by Opera Software. The browser handles common Internet-related tasks such as displaying web sites, sending and receiving e-mail messages, managing contacts, chatting on IRC, downloading files via BitTorrent, and reading web feeds. Opera is offered free of charge for personal computers and mobile phones.

Features include tabbed browsing, page zooming, mouse gestures, and an integrated download manager. Its security features include built-in phishing and malware protection, strong encryption when browsing secure websites, and the ability to easily delete private data such as HTTP cookies.

Opera runs on a variety of personal computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD. The Desktop Team recently dropped support for Solaris.

Opera is known for originating many features later adopted by other Web browsers. Despite these factors, Opera has captured only a small fraction of the worldwide personal computer browser market. It does, though, have a stronger market share on mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, and personal digital assistants. Editions of Opera are available for devices using the Maemo, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, and iPhone operating systems, as well as Java ME-enabled devices. Approximately 120 million mobile phones have been shipped with Opera. Opera is the only commercial web browser available for the Nintendo DS and Wii gaming systems. Some television set-top boxes use Opera. Adobe Systems has licensed Opera technology for use in the Adobe Creative Suite.

Speccy (System Information)

No comments September 21st, 2010

What’s in your computer? If you’re like most of us, you can probably name the processor (Intel or AMD, Celeron or Pentium), maybe how much RAM it has, and maybe how big the hard drive is.

When you go to a computer store and see all the bright shiny PCs laid out next to each other, most will have tags or stickers indicating the:

  • Processor brand and model
  • Hard drive size and speed
  • Amount of memory (RAM)
  • Graphics card
  • Operating system

Two or three years later, when it comes time to upgrade your computer, that tag or sticker may be long gone. Speccy was designed as a free electronic “what’s inside” sticker for your PC.

Xobni

No comments August 28th, 2010

Xobni is a San Francisco-based email startup. It was founded in March 2006 by Adam Smith and Matt Brezina from Adam’s dorm room in Cambridge, Massachusetts as part of the Y Combinator summer founder’s program. In late 2006, it relocated to San Francisco when the founders felt that the environment there was more suited to grow their company.

In March 2007, Xobni raised US$4.26 million from Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, and Atomico, along with a number of angel investors.

Xobni’s first product, Xobni Insight, was launched into private beta on September 18, 2007, at the TechCrunch 40 conference. Xobni Insight plugs into Microsoft Outlook and offers fast search and people-based navigation of email archives. The company has hinted at plans to offer the same functionality for other email clients. Xobni Insight has received mostly positive coverage, although initial versions had performance problems on large inboxes. The company opened its beta to the public on May 5, 2008 and has since garnered media coverage from a number of blogs and media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe and Cnet.

In February 2008, Xobni hired Jeff Bonforte, a Vice President at Yahoo!, as their CEO. In the same month, Bill Gates gave a demo of Xobni at the Office Developers’ Conference. This led to rumors of a US$20 million acquisition by Microsoft, which the company reportedly rejected.

Cisco Systems, which has been expanding its workplace collaboration tools, has taken an interest in Xobni. Xobni announced on January 5, 2009 that it closed a $7 million round of financing, its second, with Cisco as a new investor. The company’s previous investors Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Baseline Ventures and Atomico also participated. The website CrunchBase has total funding at $14.6 million for the San Francisco based software development company.

There have been a lot of questions since the product release of how Xobni planned to make money and the scope of their products. In July of 2009 Xobni released a paid version of its product called Xobni Plus, offered initially for $30. Xobni Plus includes features such as advanced search, appointment search, the ability to search multiple PST archives, no ads, and one year support. In Free Studio version 4.2 Xobni is included in the .exe setup.

“Xobni” is the word “inbox” spelled backwards. It is pronounced Zob-nee.
